Loutro

The seaside village of Loutro is situated at a distance of about 71 km south of Chania, Sfakia province, at the tip of the Cape Mouri. It is believed that this was the site of the ancient city of Finikas (Phoenix), and was the port of ancient Anopolis.

The village is named after the baths found there, the water of which came from Anopoli. The only access is by scheduled boat service from Agia Roumeli or Sfakia or on foot by using the footpath which connects Loutro with Sfakia as there is no road to Loutro.

Loutro is the ideal place for those people who want something different and a truly unique spot in Crete. A small but extremely picturesque fishing village with unique white buildings with blue windows and an everlastingly calm bay with crystal blue-green waters in south west Crete, not yet spoilt by mass tourism. There is no road in Loutro too, neither cars nor motorbikes. The people living in Loutro are very friendly and hospitable and will always be there for you.

Although anything else than a pair of flip-flops for the beach, shorts and a T-shirt, your bathers and suncream may seem completely unnecessary in Loutro, if the visitor wants there are lots of things to do :

-Daily boats to go for Swimming and sunbathing to the two fine beaches in the area (the boat leaving at 11.00 a.m. and returning at 17.00 p.m.) Sweetwater beach and Marmara Beach.

-Walk to the two other beaches, Pervolaki beach, Timios Stavros beach.

-Visit the ruins of ancient Aradena, the Byzantine church of Archangel Michael, and Anopolis.

-Rent a boat to explore the area around Loutro.

-Canoes are available for rental too.

-Scuba diving in Lybian sea with the diving center Notos mare.

-Explore with day walks the Aradena Gorge(there it is the highest bridge for bungee jumping in Greece, built 138 meters over the bottom of the gorge), the Imbros Gorge or the Samaria Gorge(its so-called "lazy way" 2-3 hours walking round trip).

-Day trip by boat to the island of Gavdos, the most southern tip of Europe and try to get a glimpse of escorting dolphins.

-Make a circular walk up to Anopolis, to Aradena to Agios Ioannis and back to Loutro.

-Rent a boat to explore the south west coastal area of Crete and admire the sunset over the sea and maybe see the dolphins.
